It's been over an year with one of the biggest pandemics in the history of mankind and the only way we can reach back to the normal world is after 100% vaccination of the whole population. There are trends of a new normal like - having your half a face covered with mask in public, online education, working from home, weekend curbs or night curbs, not having a social gathering, zoom meetings, video calls and so on.
When we talk about a long term impact of the pandemic there are both positives and negatives. Let's start with the positive ones first. I can see a drastic change in the mentality of the society towards health and hygiene. The main driver of the change became washing hands. We Indians were too lazy or ignorant about this particular aspect prior pandemic, I have barely seen anybody using hand sanitizers including myself. The only time I used to wash my hands with soap was before a meal. Many skipped that too😂. However nowadays I can see everybody especially the children acquired a habit of washing hands with soaps every now and then. This has reduced the risk of consuming germs through meal. The second best thing is wearing mask. We are not only ensuring the virus doesn't spread from us to others but also making sure we are breathing clean air free of dirt, pollution and other impurities again reducing the risk of common cold and flu.
However the more alarming impacts are coming from the education system. We have the kids and the students studying from home, attending lectures online. The effectiveness of a live class and an online class is different. The parents has to be with the student in order to ensure he/she is attentive enough to the class. We have also seen exam-less promotion to the next class and online exams for senior students. The exams conducted from home were more or less like an open book test hence are insufficient to rate effectiveness of the online classes. Also these couple of educational years have a long term impact on the student's career, as according to me the education system has failed to have a concrete option for not opening schools/colleges unlike the corporate offices who have successfully launched the work from home. The main challenge that the education system had unlike the corporate offices was the involved age group. Students and kids are not mature enough to understand what would happen if they don't attend their classes properly.
Apart from this, the school not only provides education but teaches values and principles to the students which helps them become a better person in future. Studying together with fellow classmates, playing with them, having lunch with them develops team spirit and a healthy competition. Flip side, when the children are at home which they are from over an year, they may become more home sick and dependent, and will not be able to break their comfort zones. Even if they do, the new world once the schools are open would be too challenging for them, it will take them a while to accommodate back to the system. I would like to add in another point here which is whenever the children goes to the school, they need to wake up early, they prepare themselves, wear their uniforms, take their tiffin and attend school. Then there is a schedule designed for each class, there are morning prayers before the school starts, a fixed time of lunch, a fixed time to play, a fixed time to go home. All of this is somewhere lost during this one and a half year period.
As I have mentioned earlier, the only ray of hope is bringing back the education system to it's main stream after completing vaccination. Because the early the better, it may take a while to bring things back to the normal but it will definitely reduce the amount of damage we are talking about. Let us hope we come back to the pre-pandemic world soon. Get vaccinated on your turn and keep the masks on!!!
